The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is consulting on new
draft midwifery standards.
These standards sets out what midwives need to know and
be able to do in order to be registered with the NMC and practise as a midwife
in the UK.
The standards outline the proficiencies in this document
specify the knowledge, understanding and skills that midwives must demonstrate
when caring for women, newborn infants, partners and families across all care
settings. They reflect what the public can expect midwives to know and be able to
do in order to deliver safe, effective, respectful, kind, and compassionate
midwifery care.
They also provide a benchmark for midwives from the
European Economic Area (EEA), European Union (EU) and overseas wishing to join the UK register, as well as for
those who plan to return to practice
after a period of absence.
The consultation closes 9 May 2019.
